Gentle Ruins is a series of photographs of damaged surfaces, characterized by distinct combinations of color and form. I got inspired by the works of the painter Ryan Winnen, and explored surface studies for a few years. They exist outside of the context of my immediate portraiture, materialized in an effort to produce unique compositions. The frame is as crucial as ever in this work, bringing together pieces of the world to present a sufficient aesthetic whole. When printed at large scale, these images offer a painterly effect. It holds a place in my body of work that helps me see the world differently.
