Figures of Color

Figures of Color deviates from my usual candid work, and looks closely at how black skin is represented in works of art. My intention was to use elements of light and darkness to draw attention to the skin; to engage with stark blackness in portraiture. Contemporary figurative painters like Alex Gardner and Jon Key, inspired me to translate this style into photography. With the Red Arrow Gallery in Nashville, I produced 13 large scale prints, each in an edition of 3, bringing to life a distinct vision of beauty. The subjects include friends, models and professionals that I’ve collaborated with over time. Images from this series have been exhibited domestically and internationally.
